Eco-Friendly Party Bag Idea for Kids

With these great eco-friendly party favours, this goodie bag is guaranteed to get everyone talking at your kid’s next birthday party.

All you need are a few things you might already have around the house and a short trip to your local Kmart or Target. From a tasty treat to fun activities for little hands, there’s something in this goodie bag to entertain the young ones.

It was such a fun and simple project, even my 3 year old helped me to put everything together!

How to get started with an eco-friendly goodie bag

Growing up in the 90s, I definitely had my fair share of parties at McDonald’s and Hungry Jacks. You’d know it was a kid’s birthday party when the infamous ice cream cake came out and everyone went home with a small white plastic bag filled with lollies and a random whistle toy you would never use.

Looking back, it encouraged a wasteful culture of meaningless hospitality. It’s true that the goodie bag represented an expression of gratitude but surely it could have more meaning and usefulness than that?

The simple answer is yes and yes! So after brainstorming a few kid-friendly ideas, the ultimate eco-friendly goodie bag was born.

I knew that I wanted it to be a fun, creative, sustainable and most of all, a memorable experience. Keep reading below to find out what to put in the ultimate eco-friendly goodie bag for a kids party.

Fun food idea

Chocolate Cake in a Mug Jar

This jar makes one moist and delicious chocolate cake served in mug. It’s the perfect favour that gets little hands involved with a yummy treat at the end!

What you need

One serving is roughly equivalent to a 250ml mug (1 cup). To hold all the dry ingredients, you will need the jar to be at least 200ml. I purchased a Glass Spice Jar 200ml from Big W for $1.00 each.

Ideally, you will want to pick a smaller jar so all the dry ingredients are layered and packed tightly to prevent them from being mixed.

Materials & Dry Ingredients

  • Glass jars
  •  4 Tablespoons plain flour
  • ¼ Teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ Teaspoon Bicarbonate soda
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons baking milk chocolate chips

The next step involves layering each dry ingredient in the glass jar. Once the jar is done, you can make up a thank you card with step-by-step  instructions. Here’s a sample card:

Rainbow coloured water beads

A sensory kit is not complete without a tubful of these colourful water beads. These water beads are already neatly pre-packed in a tiny 10g box that can easily fit into a goodie bag.

Where can i buy coloured water beads?

Water beads can be purchased as a multi-coloured (rainbow) pack or as individual colours. I brought these online from No Nasties, prices start from $19.95 for a set of 3 Rainbow Water Beads 10g (approximately 500 beads).

Japanese origami

Folding Japanese origami is a fantastic no-plastic alternative activity for kids and adults! Buying bulk origami paper means it’s also a great cost-saving item for each goodie bag.

Where can i buy Japanese Origami Paper?

Booktopia offers a few bulk pack options for origami paper that can be purchased online starting from $13.75 for a pack of 250 pieces in 16 traditional patterns. To keep the no-plastic theme going, I just popped a few pieces of origami paper into a brown paper lunch bag.
